If the best things in life come in small packages, even the most unique designs can be inspired by little things. Designer Arka Mirgank talks about his unique Notebook collection and more.

During the previous Bangalore Fashion Week, you had showcased a notebook themed line — how was it received by the audience?
I had the ultimate reaction from the audience. The media and all the other people gave me amazing feedback. People really liked the way I had designed  the clothes and appreciated the uniqueness.

How did your Notebook line sell?
Quite honestly, the line carried an international look. It was very different from what an Indian woman wears. Although the response, in terms of sales in India, was not very high, I have been able to sell internationally in places like Germany and France.

Would you say the Indian market is still very conservative?

Yes, we still hesitate to sport different looks and experiment with different styles, which is why I am reworking on the Notebook collection and modifying it to suit the Indian woman. I’d like to show that I can design something that suits our temperament perfectly well.

The line in question featured stencil-designed accessories. What are you going to do with them in your modified version?
I wouldn’t like to reveal anything about my modified line. Both the dresses and the accessories are, let’s say, a surprise!

Where will we see you next?
I am not taking part in the Bangalore Fashion Week this season. However, I’m preparing for the Lakmé Fashion Week and the Wills India Fashion Week, where you can see my modified Notebook line.

What inspires your designs? Do you have a signature style?
My designs are inspired by very simple, daily life things. There was a line I presented in Delhi that was inspired by a gully, and then I have my designs with notebook lines. I design for the young, lively woman — someone who is smart, chic and loves to party! I use fabrics like silk, georgette and chiffon that can make the dress elegant.

You’ve worked with celebrity designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee earlier on in your career. In what way did working with him influence you as a designer?
Sabyasachi Mukherjee is an excellent designer. He has designed clothes for people like Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan. He creates lovely and wearable designs. However, we have entirely different styles. He designs Indian wear and I design western wear. Working with him was a great experience. I marvel the way he works. The way he used fabric and colours inspires me very much.
