One can’t think of a closet minus the ubiquitous leopard prints. It’s a classic like red lips and injects an instant oomph into just about any ensemble under the sun. From Raf Simons to Burberry, Saint Laurent to Michael Kors — designers continue to reinterpret them in their own way. Pop star Jennifer Lopez has been a fan of the print and in 2013, she was seen in a bead-work gown by Michael Kors at the Met Gala. And Fall Winter 18 sees animal spots accenting the mood boards of labels like Area, DvF, Adam Selman, Tom Ford and Victoria Beckham.

More is more

When it comes to animal prints, more is more. This season is all about the phrase ‘go big or go home’. Designer Saaksha of label Saaksha & Kinni says, “There is no room for understated prints or a touch of the print. You have to fully commit and wear it boldly and proudly. This season, opt for enlarged animal prints worn as statement tees, dresses and swimsuits. Instead of pairing printed tees and jumpers with a pair of solid-coloured trousers or skirt, opt for print on print to get the most out of this trend. Kinni suggests matching one’s accessories with the print by choosing hair ties, bandanas, gloves or caps that have the same print to add an extra edge to the ensemble.

Animal prints for Fall Winter are like florals for Spring Summer. Designer Aniket Satam says, “Designers have reinterpreted animal hide in the form of prints — predominantly wild cats, snow leopard, jaguar, zebra and tiger. While some have mimicked the natural form, others have digitised them on a coloured backdrop celebrating the in-your-face and bold prints of the ’80s.”

A bold statement

The animal print splash is not just a fad. It’s a bold statement that’s here to stay. Designer Sunaina Khera observes, “It’s been around and what changes every season is the way people choose to interpret and style it in their own vocabulary. A chic way to don an animal print without going overboard is to pair it with basic separates. For instance, if you’re going for an animal print pencil skirt, choose a nude colour blouse, or maybe an ivory sweater to go with it. If you’re thinking of wearing an all-printed outfit, then opt for accessories like a patent black clutch, or metallic pumps to tone down the look.” All in all, the idea is to make a style statement without overdoing it. So what’s important is to maintain a balance and use just the right amount of print in your look.
