The search for new director general police (DGP) has  began in earnest as the incumbent Ajit Singh will retire on November 30 after serving the post for four months.

Names of OP Galhotra (ADG, Armed battalions), Sunil Kumar Mehrotra (ADG, Telecommunications), Sudhir Pratap Singh (IG, CRPF, New Delhi) and Navdeep Singh, DG (home guard), the senior most IPS in the state have started making rounds in the corridors of power.

The seniority of Navdeep, who is 81 batch officer, was bypassed by the Raje government when it picked Ajit Singh, who is one batch junior to him. At that time it was believed that Navdeep was overlooked because of his wife’s links with Congress. However, political observers feel that the Anandpal Singh encounter worked in favour of Ajit Singh as the government wanted to pacify angry Rajputs.

As the Raje government enters the final leg of its tenure, sources say it will appoint new DGP a person who will serve the remaining term. If this criterion is applied then two probables - Navdeep and Sudhir - will be out of race Navdeep retires in June next year (five months before election) while Sudhir, who is the brother of former union minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy, will retire in in January 2018, 10 months before the polls.

So, if Raje wants a DGP to serve the entire term of the government then Mehrotra and Galhotra, both of 85 batch, remain in the fray and they can supersede rest two. Galhotra will retire in October 2019, while Mehrotra in January 2019. The sources say  names of all probables are being considered but the CM take the final call on the D-day. The chances of Ajit Singh getting extension are remote.

PROMOTIONS

Nearly 100 All India Service (IAS) officers will be promoted to next scale in January, 2018. A review meeting of screening committee chaired by chief secretary Ashok Jain has scrutinised the names of IAS. The sources said that on the eve of December 31 the list of promoted officers will be released giving them new year gift. This is, however, a usual practice followed in previous years so far. Among them are 25 IPS officers who will get also promotion to the next scale. Their names will be released on the very day too.
