On Tuesday evening around 6 pm, assistant commandant Jitendra Singh, a resident of Mansarovar, Jaipur, waved goodbye to his parents at the railway station. His father and mother had come calling on him a couple of days back in Jammu where he was last posted.
“He had taken leave for two days to attend to his parents while they were visiting Jammu,” a grieving family member in Jaipur said.
It was not until that the parents reached their Rajat Path residence on Wednesday noon that they realised their son had bid them adieu for one last time at Jammu.
Jitendra Singh was among the four jawans martyred in the cross-border firing along the International Border (IB) in Jammu. Three of the brave jawans who laid their lives for their country hailed from Rajasthan.
The ceasefire violation comes not even a fortnight after the Director General Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan agreed to observe ceasefire pact of 2003 “to the letter”.
The 34-year-old man was not only serving the country by guarding its borders, he was also involved in several charity works in Jaipur, family members said.
Singh’s parents - Samundra Singh and Sumitra Devi – had travelled to meet their son. After seating them off in a train, he reported back to duty. The firing started around 10.30 pm Tuesday, when he made the supreme sacrifice for his nation.
The mother was in complete shock and couldn’t fathom that her son was no more with them.
She was speechless and had to be repeatedly consoled by the female members. Their house was already teeming with neighbours and friends who had come to condole the death of their son when they arrived in Jaipur on Wednesday noon.
“His death was reported by the media channels, but the parents who were travelling weren’t aware of the development,” a local said.
The family held back the news of his martyrdom till his parents returned to Jaipur where they were given the devastating news.
Singh’s father put up a brave front while meeting the locals and the VIPs who arrived at his doorstep to pay their respects to the martyred Jaipur boy.
Ashok Lahoti, Jaipur mayor, was among the first to visit their Mansarovar residence. Lahoti assured all possible help to the bereaved family. The mayor has also extended Jaipur Municipal Corporation’s assistance to the martyr’s kin.
