A Jaipur city based orthopedic and joint replacement surgeon has created a national record by performing a hip reconstruction surgery on an oldest woman in India. The woman who is 104-year-old belongs to Rajasthan.

As per medical history, the previous joint replacement of such an old aged woman is registered in the UK. The governor of Rajasthan Kalyan Singh honoured the doctor with a certificate for the achievement.

“Basanti Devi of Jaswantgarh in Nagaur had suffered a fall which led to the fracture and traumatic arthritis of hip joints subsequently. The complication was such that the pain spread to her entire backside, making her unable to even move out of bed,” Dr Ranat Vishnoi, joint replacement surgeon at Shalby hospital who performed the successful surgery said. “It was found that ball joint in the hip of the patient had fractured and was touching the socket causing arthritis. According to medical science, joint replacement in senior citizens is highly risky as it can lead to organ failure,” he added.

According to Dr Vishnoi, “It was a bit challenging for us to take the decision for the surgery due to the age of the patient and especially to convince her relatives, we had to take extra precautions while performing surgery as the patient had a very low weight and was very weak.”

“In this case, the patient was treated by forming new holes with modular bipolar technique to correct the multiple fractures. There are joint replacement repairs performed in abroad, but the case of new hatch is not on the record so far,” said Dr Vishnoi.
