Another debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in Sripura village under the Ayana police station of Kota district late on Monday evening.
Murlidhar Meena, a garlic cultivator, was suffering from depression for the past few days as he was under heavy debt after taking loan from Kisan Credit Card and other banks. He was also facing marital problems as his wife along with their children had moved to her parents’ house, a day prior to the incident.
What proved to be the last straw was that he was forced to sell his produce at Baran mandi at very low price last night. After returning from the mandi, he had called his wife and children before consuming the poison.
He was rushed to the Maharao Bheem Singh hospital in Kota, where he died around midnight. This is the fifth suicide by debt-ridden farmers in Kota region in June. The government officials however deny such allegations.
Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Prabhu Lal Saini on Monday claimed that no farmer in the state has committed suicide due to financial reasons.
Saini, speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Bhagwati Devi Dev Sanskriti Woman Agriculture College in Seswali town of Baran district, said that if any farmer in the state is proved to have committed suicide due to agriculture crisis or debt, he would quit politics.
He said the farmers of the state are hard working and have self-respect. They cannot commit suicide.
The body has been handed over to the family members after postmortem at MBS hospital in Kota on Tuesday morning and a case under section 174 of Cr PC has been registered in this connection, SHO said.
