A special SC/ST court in Kota on Monday convicted Ankur Padia of kidnapping and killing Rudraksh Handa and sentenced him to death. Ankur’s elder brother Anoop Padia and partner in crime was given life imprisonment while two other accomplices were handed down prison terms of four and two years respectively.

Special judge Giriraj Kumar Agrawal in his 326-pages judgment convicted the key accused Ankur (37) to capital punishment under IPC sections 302, 364 (A) and other sections while Anoop (40) got life imprisonment under sections 374 and 120(B) of IPC, Public Prosecutor Kamal Kant Sharma said. The court also sentenced Mahaveer and Karanjeet Singh to 4 and 2 years of imprisonment under section 201 of IPC and sections of IT Act, he added. Mahaveer was the servant to Ankur and helped him in the crime while Karanjeet Singh provided the convict with fake SIM cards, Sharma said.

Terming the crime as ‘rare of the rarest’, the special judged observed the crime committed by the key convict was heart-rendering and no other but the capital punishment should be sentenced for such heinous crime, Sharma said. Just the thought of how the 7-year-old innocent boy, whom the convict threw into canal with tied hands and feet, might have taken his last breath, the special court observed while delivering the death penalty, Sharma said.

At least 110 witnesses and more 500 documents were produced by the prosecution during the trial while one witness was produced by the defence.

Rudraksh, son of a bank manager Puneet Handa, was kidnapped on the eve of October 9, 2014 from park in Talwandi area of Kota city. On the same evening, Ankur Padia made a landline call to Rudraksh’s parents and demanded a ransom of Rs. 2 crore. But Rudraksh’s body was recovered the following morning on October 10, 2014 from a canal in Jhakmund village of Talera police station area of Bundi district.

Ankur Padia was arrested on October 27 from Kanpur (UP) and his brother Anoop Padia from Lucknow.

Ankur had committed the crime as he was under Rs. 1.50 crore debt.

The tragic abduction-cum-murder of Rudraksh was later included in police study curriculum for teaching during the training of police personnel.

Expressing satisfaction over conviction of all the culprits, Rudraksh’s parents, Puneet Handa and Shradha Handa said justice has been done.
