5,000 'lost' Aadhaar cards show up in Jaipur scrap dealers shop

Even as there is ongoing debate over security concerns surrounding the Aadhaar database, thousands of Aadhaar cards surfaced in a bag at a scrap dealer's shop in Jaipur on Thursday.

The matter came to light when a few children passing by saw the Aadhaar cards and informed the local councillor. Interestingly, the envelopes are marked with a Rs 5 stamp and have a despatch seal, denoting that they were to be posted.

About 4,000-5,000 Aadhaar cards were found in the plastic bag, which were reportedly sold by an unidentified man at the scrap dealer's shop.

The children who saw the cards informed the local councillor, Ikramuddin, who immediately took action. "We then contacted the people from the mobile numbers written on the cards and found that they have not received their cards. They include schoolchildren, women and professionals," said the councillor.

The matter was reported to the postal department and Jalupura police. "Officers from the postal department were called to the spot and a team of Jalupura police station officials also reached the spot," said Likhma Ram, Station House Officer, Jalupura Police Station.
