Virender Sehwag didn't mince his words after Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) were humbled by Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in a must-win clash in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 on Sunday.

Whoever would have won the match would have qualified for the Playoffs, but things were made all too easy for RPS as KXIP simply didn't show up at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

Batting first, the Punjab outfit were shot-out for 73. While there is no doubt that the RPS bowlers were impressive, the lesser said about the KXIP batters the better.

Sehwag, who is the mentor of the Punjab side, always played with a straight bat through his glorious career as an opener for Team India. On Sunday, during the post-match press conference, Viru was at his aggressive best as he blamed KXIP skipper Glenn Maxwell for the massive disappointment.

"It's well known that when Maxwell gets going, he's brilliant. But the point is that he didn't fire for us at all in the entire tournament," said Sehwag. "He didn't take enough responsibility as captain."

"When your senior foreign players like Eoin Morgan and Martin Guptill fail repeatedly, there's not much one can expect," added Viru. "International players are expected to adapt to any condition, but that simply wasn't the case for us this time around. I had told the players during the strategic time-out that we can make a match of it if we at least bat out the 20 overs. But we couldn't even do that."

One doesn't often witness a coach/mentor squarely blaming the captain in public, but trust Sehwag to pull a surprise or two. Wonder how Maxwell will react to this tirade by the Indian cricket legend.
