Will welcome any foray by Tatas into aviation sector: Praful Patel

Responding to Ratan Tata's statement that he was asked to pay a bribe of Rs15 crore to get into the civil aviation sector, the civil aviation minister said, 'It is unfortunate that Mr Tata had a bad experience in the past.'

Civil aviation minister Praful Patel today welcomed "any foray" by Tatas into the civil aviation sector, a day after Ratan Tata said he did not enter the airline business as he was not comfortable with the idea of bribing Rs15 crore to a minister.
 
"The civil aviation ministry will welcome and objectively look into any foray by Tatas in the civil aviation sector," he said here.
 
Responding to Ratan Tata's statement that he was asked to pay a bribe of Rs15 crore to get into the civil aviation sector, Patel said, "It is unfortunate that Mr Tata had a bad experience in the past."
 
In 1997, Tata group and Singapore Airlines had floated a JV to bid for Air India.
 
Addressing a gathering in Dehradun yesterday, the Tata Group chairman had said he did not enter the airline business as he was not comfortable with the idea of bribing Rs15 crore to a minister, as had been suggested by an industrialist.
 
He said he had regrets that despite being a pioneer in the airline industry, the group faced enormous problems in setting up a domestic airlines in collaboration with Singapore Airlines.
