Ever wondered how the known and leading companies in Ahmedabad got their name? In many cases, it is very easy for the promoters as they either name the company after a close family member or coin the names after carrying out extensive research.
Gujarat, the hub of pharma companies, has drug manufacturers who have christened their company with different logics and reasons.
Cadila Pharmaceuticals, one of the oldest pharmaceutical companies of Gujarat, is the abbreviated form of 'Chemicals, Analysis, Drugs & Industrial Lab', revealed chairman of Cadila Pharmaceuticals, IA Modi.
Another pharmaceutical company of the state, Claris, is named after 'clarion', a musical instrument. Dishman Pharmaceuticals is a combination of names of its promoter JR Vyas's family members.
"Dishman is a combination of names of my niece Devanshi and my daughter Mansi. We wanted to have an international name for business. So, we juggled with both the names and zeroed on Dishman," said CMD of Dishman Pharmaceuticals, JR Vyas.
How about this, a Gujarat company named after a Roman God? Yes, there is one, and a quite famous one, Zydus Cadila, which is named after Roman God, Zeus.
"Zeus is considered as a God who is concerned with people's welfare. To give a proprietary name Zeus was changed to Zyus and then 'd', which stands for 'dawn' of a new era or chapter, was added to it to coin the name Zydus," said an official from Zydus group.
Motif Inc, the largest BPO company of the state got its name courtesy the internet. "We searched for a suitable name of our company on the internet, and came up with Motif, which means repetitive pattern in a piece of music or art. We chose this name as the business we are into, has a repetitive kind of nature," revealed company founder, Parul Mehta.
It might sound strange but it is true. Anil Products, which was earlier knows as Anil Starch, was not named after any promoter or family member.
"In 1939, it was formed by Lalbhai Group and during those days, names of practically every group company would start with the letter ‘A’. Later, Sheth family took charge of the company," informed an official of Anil Products.
With few exceptions, almost all companies of Arvind Group, starts with an ‘A’ such as, Arvind Products, Asman Investments, Anup Engineering, and more.
Intas Pharmaceuticals was earlier a trade body called ‘International Trade Association’, which later became Intas.
Similarly, Kunvarji Group, which is into commodity broking activities, is named after the father of the promoter.
