Despite tall claims by police regarding stringent patrolling and other steps to curb thefts, thieves are having hay days during this festival. On Friday, another theft of Rs8.36 lakh came to light in the city.

According to police, burglars stole 74 tolas of gold jewellery worth Rs7.4 lakh and cash of Rs91,000 from a house in Shilpa apartment, Makanji Park, Adajan Road on Wednesday, while house owner Ishwarlal Barmesha, a textile trader by profession and his family had gone to Vapi.

Police said the burglars had broken open the safe in which the valuables were kept. The incident came to light only when the family returned, after which, Barmesha lodged a complaint with the Rander police.

Around a dozen thefts and break-ins, in which goods worth more than Rs15 lakh were stolen, have been reported in Surat in the past one week. In a similar incident, Rs16.58 lakh in cash and jewellery were stolen from a jeweller's bungalow in Navsari on Thursday night. Owner of AB Jewellers in Navsari, Bhikhu Shah and his family had gone to Pavagadh.
