Trials in Commonwealth Games lanes lead to traffic snarls in Delhi

The trials were conducted on Nizamuddin Bridge, Ring Road-Captain Gaur Marg upto Kalkaji Mandir and Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teressa Crescent Road from 12 noon to 2pm, which led to traffic snarls on both the stretches.

Commuters had another harrowing day as Delhi police today continued with the trials on exclusive lanes for Commonwealth Games vehicles on two stretches in the national capital.

The trials were conducted on Nizamuddin Bridge, Ring Road-Captain Gaur Marg upto Kalkaji Mandir and Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teressa Crescent Road from 12 noon to 2pm, which led to traffic snarls on both the stretches.

"The traffic was moving at snail's pace on Sardar Patel Marg and it took me more than an hour to reach Mother Teressa Crescent," said Ashok Kumar, a commuter.

Another round of trials will be conducted tomorrow on four stretches -- Road No 56-Road No 58A upto Yamuna Sports Complex, Kalkaji Mandir-Ma Anand Mai Marg, Lal Kuan-M B Road, Surajkund Road, Ring Road from Bhairon Marg upto Rajghat crossing and Ring Road from Chandgi Ram Akhara to Mal Road.

The New Delhi police had begun trials on weekdays yesterday which resulted in traffic snarls, compounding problems for the commuters who have been reeling under disrputions due to have rains in the city in recent weeks.

The exclusive lanes for Commonwealth Games will become operational from September 20 and violators will face a fine of Rs2,000 and their vehicles will be impounded.

A notification to this effect has been issued by the lieutenant governor's office.
