Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will redevelop all rivulets in Surat city. The civic body aims to make all the rivulets cleaner and also use them as a mode of transportation. A presentation for the same was made before Union environmental minister, who has asked civic authorities to present a Detailed Project Report (DPR).

The SMC has prepared a comprehensive project of redeveloping them and creating public amenities. The proposed project 'Rejuvenation and Rehabilitation of Rivulets' is being developed under Environmental Management Plan. Under the project, SMC plans to relocate all shanties on banks of rivulets and remove all illegal drainage connections, plant trees and develop roads.

Footpaths, separate tracks for bi-cycles, interconnecting roads, parking and other public amenities will also be constructed along the rivulets.  Sources said that SMC plans to shift people who live by the banks of rivulets to houses that will be specially constructed. SMC has prepared a preliminary draft plan of Rs350 crore, for execution of the project.

"The project will help save Mindhola River that passes between Sachin and Maroli. Six rivulets (Mithi, Kankara, Varachha, Koyli, Bhedwad and Khajod) pass from the city and then merge with Mindhola. These rivulets cover 47 km in the city before getting merged with Mindhola," Jatin Shah, executive engineer of drainage department, SMC, said. He added that focus is on areas that are merged into SMC limits in 2006 because these areas lack proper drainage connections. Focus is also on tracing out industries that discharge harmful effluents into these rivulets.

The project was recently tabled before Union Environment minister Jairam Rameh, while he was in Surat. Municipal Commissioner S Aparna made a presentation before the minister, who promised all possible help to SMC. Ramesh asked civic officials to prepare a comprehensive DPR and submit it to the ministry.

"The project is planned for strengthening and monitoring of all rivulets passing from city and creates awareness among citizens. We want to do fencing around the rivulets to make it proper greener and environment friendly. The preliminary DPR is just to get an idea about the project, we will prepare final DPR, which will be submitted to the ministry," S Aparna, said.
