At first sight it looked like a simple school inauguration event, but UPA chairperson stormed the territory of Gujarat's chief minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. She addressed a gathering of more than 700 people at Vadnagar, Modi's native village, through video conference from Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

Sonia was inaugurating 31 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya JNVs, on the occasion of International Literacy Day. Of these 31 new JNVs, two schools were inaugurated in Gujarat — in Vadnagar, Mehsana and Panchmahal. However, the inauguration ceremony for both was held at Vadnagar.

Vijay Kumar, principal of JNV, Vadnagar said: "Apart from the 700 people, MP Jayshree Patel, Mehsana collector Ajay Bhadu, president of Sarvodaya Seva Trust, Somabhai Modi and deputy commissioner of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Pune regional office, were present at the function."

"Sonia also listened to the speeches delivered by the MP, the collector and other dignitaries."

Kumar added: "Apart from the dignitaries, more than 500 parents of 155 students, teachers and staff and invitees were present. As the new building of JNV Vadnagar Mehsana is now ready, our intake capacity will be doubled from 40 students to 80 students from the next academic year."
