Chief minister Sheila Dikshit has favoured strict penalties for traffic violations in the capital such as the one of Rs2,000 that was prescribed for vehicles straying into the Commonwealth Games lanes.
She thanked Delhiites for observing discipline during the Games and hoped it will continue.
"The people of Delhi have really risen to the occasion, including the police... Every Delhiite rose to the occasion," Dikshit said in an interaction with PTI journalists here.
She was particularly happy over the way the Delhiites observed traffic rules during the Games as a result of which there were no traffic snarls.
The chief minister agreed that traffic discipline was ensured mainly because of the heavy fine of Rs2000 for the vehicles straying into lanes dedicated for Games-related traffic.
"Challans have to be there. I think this has been a great lesson for all of us," she said when asked whether the heavy fine of Rs2000 should continue.
"I do hope that the severe fines would continue," the chief minister said while noting that the decision could not be taken by her but by the traffic police.
To a question, Dikshit said she would like the Games lane to continue in the sense that the right lane is left free for overtaking.
While praising the Delhiites, she said, "They all went, stood in queues, which was unheard of in Delhi. I hope, some of these should be left behind."
She also praised policemen, saying she had not heard any complaint about them being rude to anyone.
On upgrading the public transport system here, she said the 6,000 air-conditioned low floor buses procured for the Games would be utilised for it.
For maintenance of these buses, TATA and Ashok Leyland have been given contracts for their upkeep for next seven years, she said.
