Maharashtra governor Sanayangba Chubatoshi Jamir will discharge additional duties as Gujarat governor till regular arrangements are made. Jamir was sworn in as Gujarat governor at Gandhinagar on Thursday.

Pandit Nawal Kishore Sharma’s term as governor ended more than a week ago on July 22. However, Sharma continued to hold the governor’s office as the newly appointed governor, Devendra Nath Dwivedi, is recuperating in a Delhi hospital.

According to sources in the governor’s house, there were little chances of Dwivedi coming to Gujarat to take charge anytime soon as his recovery could take at least a fortnight.

Jamir was welcomed at the Ahmedabad airport by chief minister Narendra Modi and chief secretary D Rajgopalan and was given a guard of honour by the state. State assembly speaker Ashok Bhatt, ministers Narottambhai Patel, Dilip Sanghani, Jaynarayan Vyas, Saurabh Patel, Jaysinhji Chauhan and Ahmedabad district collector Harit Shukla were also present at the airport.

Born on October 17, 1931, Jamir did his early education in Mokokchung in Nagaland and in Calcutta, and his higher studies at Allahabad University where he did his BA, LLB in 1958. He has been involved in politics since his student days. He served as chief minister of Nagaland four times.
