Poverty drove her to be a 'dance girl'

It was abject poverty that drove the 22-year-old alleged rape victim to be a 'dance girl'.

The girl, who went to Delhi to earn a living, was born in poverty to a father who was a land labourer. Sources say that she took this step to feed her seven siblings and herself. "She became a dance girl in Delhi and often came to Ahmedabad on assignments," said sources.

Her contact in Ahmedabad was a person called Harsh, a resident of Satellite area.

On Tuesday, an agent identified as Lalo, resident of Siddhi Tower in Satellite, called her up and offered a deal for a dance show. "He promised her Rs2,500 for an hour of dance. Harsh and Lalo took her in the former's car and she was driven to the accused Upendra's house by another agent, Sunil, in his car," said the source.

At Upendra's flat No 402 in Manibhadra apartment, the girl was forced to consume a spiked cold drink at knife point.

"She was then allegedly taken to a room and raped by the accused and his driver Tejinath Jogi," said the source.

The girl allegedly told police that she was later thrown out of the house with the help of the society's watchman Laxman. She then called Harsh using a cellphone borrowed from a teen passing by and later informed the police.

The incident happened between 2.30 am and 6 am on Tuesday.

Police arrested Upendra and Tejinath on Tuesday while watchman Laxman was held on Wednesday.

The girl has accused the watchman of beating her.
