Suresh Dalal, a poet who worshipped Lord Krishna with feelings that can only match those of Radha, bid adieu to the material world on Friday to meet his Lord on Janmashtami. A complete literary personality, associated with all aspects of literary work, beginning with creation to publication, and most importantly in love with poetry, surely Dalal will go down in the annals of history as one of the most coveted names of Gujarati literature.
Born in 1932 in Thane, Maharashtra, Dalal was all of these – a Gujarati poet, an essayist, litterateur, editor and an academician. Dalal, who penned wonderful lines such as ‘Shyam tane hun sacche kahu chhu, maan malajo lopi: hun to tair, he Girdhari gaya janam ni Gopi’, ‘Radhanu naam tame vansdina sur ma vehtu na muko Ghanshyam’ and ‘Mandir sathe parni Mira,’ besides some popular songs ‘Kamal kare chhe, ek dosi ek dosa ne haju vhal kare che,’ passed away due to a heart attack at his residence in the Cuffe Parade area of Mumbai.
Dalal’s most famous song was ‘Radha nu nam’. Some of his other famous works were ‘Vruksh vruksh ni dal dal’, ‘tame vato karo to’, ‘hu ek anami nadi’, ‘prem amare karvo,’ and others. He is survived by his wife Shushila Dalal and two daughters - Niyati and Mitali.
Dalal also received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2005 for his poem Akhand Zalar Vage. He also received awards from the Gujarat government five times in his distinguished career. Dalal encouraged new poets through his magazine Kavita and as a publisher through Image Publication. He was currently working on publishing a collection of poems from 11 leading Gujarati poets such as Nirnjan Bhagat and Madhav Ramanuj to name a few.
Dalal’s career as an academician includes his services as head of the Gujarati department at SNDT Women's University; vice-chancellor at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda; and a national lecturer for the UGC. He had also served as member of the Advisory Board of Gujarati Sahitya Academy from 1983 to 1987.
CM Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Dalal.
