It's been not more than a few days since they were elected to power, but the city's new corporators are already in action in their respective wards. Residents across the city are approaching their newly-elected representatives with several problems, most of them pertaining to basic civic amenities.

The BJP, the ruling party in the AMC, went to town about their developmental works while campaigning for the elections. However, barely a few days since the polls, residents are asking for the most basic of amenities. City corporators say residents of their wards are paying them visits, as also making calls regarding various issues.

Rakesh Parikh, newly elected BJP corporator from Stadium ward, acknowledged receiving phone calls from residents about civic issues. Parikh however, defended his party by citing population growth as a reason for insufficient civic development in the area. "The limited budgetary provisions are also a constraint in providing amenities to people," he said.

The average corporator's day begins with phone calls regarding insufficient water supply, as early as at 6 am. Young corporator from Sarkhej ward, Samirkhan Pathan, said that he has had to reschedule his routine. "But I am thankful to the training I received as a youth Congress worker. I am aware of the people's problems, and am trying my level best to solve them as soon as I
can," said Pathan.

On the other hand, many homemakers-turned-corporators have to entrust a part of their household work to family members, so that they can listen to people and their problems. Shantaben Makwana, newly-elected BJP corporator from Naroda, said that she needs to keep herself free for a certain period of time everyday, and her son and daughter-in-law help by sharing in the burden.

Corporators of the newly-merged areas have more responsibility to shoulder, as these areas are lagging behind in terms of infrastructure development. The new corporators say they are focusing mainly on basic amenities in this area, and will take up project development issues later.
