Everybody has a reason to throng the Ramlila maidan. While a multitude of the middle-class is here to show solidarity with the Gandhian, for the vendors dotting the crowds — selling props suited for the occasion — it means great business.

So, Rajasthani teenager girls who till last week beckoned women for applying heena on their hands at India Gate have now started selling caps and badges written ‘I am Anna’, tricolour flag and mufflers. There are others who have come from nearby towns like Bulandshahar and Moradabad to make some extra bucks.

Sixteen-year-old Sunita from Rajasthan said, “I apply heena at India gate. But after I started selling caps, I have been earning Rs500 a day compared to around Rs200-250 that I would get earlier.” She has been selling the Anna caps at Rs15 each.

Deepak, who has taken leave from his work in Bulandshahar and come to Delhi to capitalize on the war against corruption, is selling Anna caps at Rs10. His trick, focus on volume and reduce margins, has jacked up his earnings.

“I have already sold 1,900 caps in the last two days and has a stock of another 1,000 caps. I earn Rs4,500 a month in Bulandshahar, but here in two days, I have made Rs3,000,” said Deepak, who hopes to take back home at least Rs 15,000.

Asked why Anna caps are so important in the movement, supporter Suman Bansal, a chartered accountant said: “This cap inspires us and boosts our confidence.”

Many supporters are getting their cheeks painted with tricolour for Rs10. Delhi’s Uttam, who has been doing it for the last two days, has earned double than his daily earnings otherwise. “I make sweet boxes and earn Rs300-350 per day. By tri-colour painting on cheeks, I have been earning Rs800-900 a day.”

Children in the local slums have also started making business by painting cheeks. Says Naved, “The school is off today and that’s why I came here to paint people’s cheeks. I will be here tomorrow as well since it is holiday.”
