Your friendly neighbourhood policeman will soon have a stylish new uniform, thanks to Gujarat’s Golden Jubilee year.

The colour of the uniform will not change but it will have features that police personnel on duty will find very useful.

Gujarat’s director general of police, SS Khandwawala, is trying to finalise a new-look uniform for the state’s police personnel. The new dress will consist of smart shirts and six-pocket trousers for men, and salwar-kameez for women police over 35 years of the age. A final decision in the matter is expected by the end of this month.

Khandwawala said most aspects of the new uniform had been finalised. The colour of the uniform will remain khaki but its design and style will be changed to meet the requirements of policemen’s job. The new dress will come into force before the end of May next year when the Swarnim Gujarat  celebrations end.

“The new uniforms have been designed with two things in mind - utility and look,” Khandwawala said. He said the new-look uniform had been designed by a committee of six-seven officers who had studied the uniforms of different police forces of the world. The committee had then come up with a design suited to the requirements of the state’s police. NIFT, Ahmedabad, and ATIRA had helped in ensuring the fabric’s quality.

The uniform will be trousers and shirts for both female and male police personnel till the women reach the age of 35. “Women police personnel over the age of 35 will be provided the salwar kameez,” Khandwawala said.

The Gujarat DGP further said that the new uniforms are designed to be comfortable and useful for police personnel on duty. The trousers, for instance, will have separate pockets for water
bottle, diary, some snacks and, of course, weapons.

Currently, the same fabric is used for both trousers and shirts. The new uniform, however, may have different fabrics for both. “Also, the fabric of the shirt will be such that it will get no wrinkles even after rough use throughout the whole day,” he said.
