The static surveillance team, along with officials of Gujarat University police, was conducting routine vehicle check on Sunday when a Tata Safari with a nameplate mentioning ‘Ex-MLA’ grabbed their attention. A closer inspection shocked them as they found a large knife, a sickle like sharp weapon apart from some sticks.

The car was ferrying Bijalbhai Damor, former MLA from Dahod on Sunday afternoon, when Rupesh Tiwari, a customs inspector, now serving as a member of static surveillance team deployed at Seema-Saurabh crossroads spotted the vehicle. After stopping the car, Tiwari along with officials of Gujarat University police searched of his car, when they unearthed the weapons.

Damor claimed he had come to Ahmedabad to meet BJP leaders and convince them to give him a ticket for the upcoming elections. However, cops were not satisfied and arrested him. A resident of Chundadi village of Panchmahals, Damor was an MLA from Randhikpur constituency of Dahod during 1991-1996.

Later, he joined BJP in 2008. Damor, a relative of state minister Jaswantsinh Bhabhor, was accompanied by Amarsinh Bariya, a resident of Panchmahals, Mukesh Jain, a resident of Limbdi, Ramesh Parmar, convener of Dahod district Maldhari cell, and Kanak Chauhan, a resident of Dahod — all of whom have been arrested. It is learnt that cops later presented the group before the magistrate before letting them go on bail.
