Five people of a family attempted suicide on Monday when they found that a large part of their ancestral land had been sold off by some third party without their knowledge.

The miscreants had allegedly used fake documents and forged signatures to prepare documents that gave them the power of attorney to sell off as much as 7 acres (18 bighas) of land in Dodar village of Sanand.

The five people were cheated into selling their land a few months back by a real estate agent, Vikram Solanki, and seven others. The land was allegedly sold for Rs5 crore but the owners of the land were paid just Rs1.25 lakh.

Mansinh Sendhav (65), Kalu Sendhav (35), Hamir Sendhav (40), Jatan Sendhav (38) and Leela Sendhav (35) tried to kill themselves by consuming pesticides at Solanki's house in Dodar.

They consumed the poison at around 8:30 am on Monday and were rushed to the nearby Sanand Civil Hospital. Sources said Mansinh and his family had attempted suicide because they failed to get any money from Vikram Solanki after the initial Rs1.25 lakh they had given them.

Arjan Solanki, the son-in-law of Mansinh, said the Sanand police had not arrived at Sanand civil hospital till 1 pm on Monday.

By then, the five people who had consumed poison had been shifted to VS Hospital in Ellisbridge area after consulting the doctors.

The Sanand police recorded the statement of the victims at VS Hospital late in the afternoon on Monday and registered a formal complaint against Vikram Solanki and seven others.

MR Asari, PSI with Sanand police, told DNA that a complaint of cheating had been registered and the police were hunting for the accused. He also said that Solanki was absconding and was also wanted in connection with other land scams in Sanand.

The seven people, besides Solanki, named in the complainant are Digvijay Vaghela, Pruthvi Bhagvandas, Prakash Parmar, Hiteenrasinh Vaghela, Mahavir Vaghela, Dharmendra Jadeja and Digvijay Sarvaiyya.
