In more bad news for BJP, its senior leader BC Khanduri today described as "unfortunate" the developments in the party and said taking action before making a proper analysis was "not done".

"Whatever is happening in BJP is unfortunate," said Khanduri, who was made to quit as chief minister of Uttarakhand after his party lost in all the five Lok Sabha seats in the state.

The former chief minister wrote to BJP chief Rajath Singh and is understood to have said that the party should have gone into the reasons behind its defeat before removing him as chief minister.

Singh, however, declined to make any comment on the letter. "I have nothing to say on Khanduri's letter to me," he said in Delhi.

Khanduri said whatever was happening in the party right now "is a cause of concern".

"Keeping in view the BJP's record, its discipline, love for the country and people's faith in the party, whatever is happening right now is a cause of concern.

"I pray to God that the party regains its past glory and people's faith be restored like in the past," he said.

The senior BJP leader had yesterday dubbed as "unusual and uncalled for" the hue and cry in BJP over its poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls and said the party should have gone into the reasons behind its defeat before removing him.

"But this was not done," rued Khanduri, who became the first victim after the party's dismal performance in the general elections.

He also said the party should have reviewed its electoral performance with a cool mind and whatever action it had to take, it should have taken after proper analysis.

Khanduri said the atmosphere of hopelessness after the party's poor performance in Lok Sabha polls was uncalled for.

"It is not that the party has been ruined. It has secured 116 seats in the Lok Sabha this time. The position of Congress in 1996 was worse," he said.

Asked why he was not invited for the BJP's Chintan Bhaithak in Shimla, Khanduri said, "it is not an issue. The issue is that before taking any action views of all concerned should be elicited."

The PM said anti-corruption agencies must make the cost of corruption unacceptably high for those indulging in it and there should be clear focus on corruption- prone areas and individuals so that the available resources for anti-corruption efforts are not dissipated.

"Rapid, fair and accurate investigation of allegations of corruption in high places should remain your utmost priority. The nation expects you to act firmly, swiftly and without fear or favour. And you have the constitutional and legal protection and safeguards to do so," he said.

Singh said the malaise of corruption, so sapping our efforts to march ahead as a nation, should be treated immediately and effectively.

"And all of you present here today can contribute substantially in this war against corruption. Indeed, you are in a privileged position to do so," he said.

The prime minister said the people have great faith and expectations from the CBI and its officials which was evident from the frequent public demand for a CBI investigation especially when a serious crime takes place.

"I urge the officers of the CBI to do their utmost to live up to this expectation. There have been occasions in the recent past when the conduct of the Bureau has come in for severe public criticism. I would like the CBI to have a critical look at itself and introspect deeply with an end to further improve its functioning," he said.
