According to the Delhi traffic police, the rising number of cars in the city has added to these numbers.
Almost 2,000 persons died in road accidents in Delhi this year, making the capital the worst among metros in the country in terms of traffic safety.
According to statistics released on Monday, 1,918 persons died in accidents in the national capital region. This year, there have been 7,320 accidents in Delhi, meaning almost an accident an hour. Even though the figure is less than last year’s 1,980, it is still disturbing. Nearly 55% of those who died in the road accidents were pedestrians.
According to the Delhi traffic police, the rising number of cars in the city has added to these numbers.
A senior traffic police official said that truck drivers were among the main violators, involved in 25% fatal accidents.
Despite stringent rules against drunken driving, it is still the reason for the most fatal accidents in the city. “In the last 11 months, 12,500 drivers have been booked for this.
We have initiated special drives in areas where pubs are located to discourage people from driving under the influence of alcohol. It is much more than last year’s 7,500,” a police official said.
