The city just had a new police commissioner, and is now all set to have a new building to house him. The Ahmedabad city police commissionerate is planning to come up with a swanky new office building in the near future.

The department is looking at the models of police bhavans constructed in various parts of the country, such as New Delhi, Mumbai and the neighbouring Rajasthan police headquarters, for guidance regarding the construction of the new building.

Sources said that in the last couple of years, most districts have rebuilt their headquarters, except Ahmedabad. This is being attributed to the fact that the commissionerate office reportedly could not come up with a proper plan.

Sources say that the existing building is inadequate for the staff it houses, and despite various extensions over the years, it is unable to handle all the requirements. The building is said to leak during the rains, and is reportedly damaged in several places.

Sources also add that the matter has been discussed with former city police commissioner SK Saikia, and a team of surveyors has been called up. However, Saikia's transfer in-between, delayed the process.

The matter has reportedly been discussed for the last many months by the joint commissioners of police as well, among themselves. However, the new building kept getting delayed for some reason or the other, and the fact that they did not have an administrative officer in the recent past, also contributed to it.
Joint commissioner of police, Dr Meera Ramniwas, confirmed the development to DNA.

"We are trying to survey the land that we already possess at the commissioner's office. Once the survey is over, we will decide the model the building will be based on. We are looking at the different police bhavans that have come up in recent times in Mumbai and New Delhi for inspiration," she said.

Sources, however, said that the department may take help of reputed architects from the city or state itself. The new building may not have a corporate look. Instead, it is likely to resemble traditional, fort-like offices.
