The condition of CPI(M) patriarch Jyoti Basu turned “very, very critical” on Friday with multi-organ failure. He was totally dependent on support systems, an attending doctor said.

“He is very, very critical. Three organs — lung, kidney and the haemodynamic system — have failed and now his heart and liver function is also deteriorating and the senorium of the brain is very low,” Dr AK Maity, Basu’s personal physician who is also on the medical board of the private hospital where he is admitted, told reporters.

Asked how long Basu could survive in this condition, Dr Sushrut Banerjee, a senior member of the medical board, said, “We’ve done everything we can under medical norms. I don’t know what will happen and when it will happen.”

Despite two sessions of haemodialysis on Thursday night and Friday morning, Basu’s kidney function and urine output showed no improvement.

Banerjee said, “His kidney stopped functioning totally. So, we conducted two rounds of haemodialysis, but without much effect.”
As news of Basu’s health spread, VVIPs started visiting the hospital. Chief minister Buddhadeb  Bhattacharjee and Left Front chairman Biman Bose made multiple visits.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh is arriving in Kolkata on Saturday to attend various functions.
