Sultan Ahmed's personal visit to Ahmedabad says a lot about how bureaucrats also need a time-off with family.

Minister of State (tourism) Ahmed visited Sarkhej Roza on Tuesday as part of his two-day holiday to the city. He, however, winced at the pitiable condition of the monument.

"Sarkhej Roza is under Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and it is their job to maintain and restore it. Clearly, their work is not upto the mark," said Ahmed. He was accompanied by his wife and children on the tour. "I will be writing a letter to concerned committee about it," he added.

The 500-year-old monument is popular for its architecture, expansive courtyards and a lake, that is now dry. Ahmed, during his visit, went through all literature about the structure available on site. Apart from other artifacts, the minister was also shown Badshah Ahmed Shah's grave at the Roza.

Minister Ahmed was particularly attracted to the Raja-Rani Mahal, which according to him needs immediate restoration. He promised to do whatever possible, in his capacity, about it. "It is not the question of maintaining a monument but of upholding its history, culture and heritage future generations," said Ahmed.

Apart from the rich Islamic heritage that one associates with Sarkhej Roza, a distinct Sufi element can be felt among the ruins.

"This monument is important when it comes to Sufism - a liberal culture unique to this part of the world. The Roza must become a beacon of Sufi harmony and diversity to the world."

This visit by the minister will boost awareness about apathy for the monument, believes AS Saiyed, president of Sarkhej Roza committee. "Sarkhej Roza is an ancient and valuable heritage monument. It needs to be promoted by the society," said Saiyed.
