Slumdwellers in Ahmedabad are all set to get an identity, literally. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has undertaken a survey, and is spending Rs2 crore to get complete data of people living in city's slum area.

The survey, known as socioeconomic and biometric survey of slumdwellers in Ahmedabad, is aimed at acquiring minute data about the slumdwellers to give them a biometric Identity Card. A record of the details will also be available with the civic body.

The household survey, which has been undertaken with the help of Delhi-based company, is almost 80% completed and covers slum areas in all the six zones of the city. Around, 1.60 lakh houses are covered so far. According to the 2001 census report, around 1.76 lakh families reside in slum area in Ahmedabad. The officials expect to complete the work for the survey within the next three months.

“When a team of surveyors visit slum houses, they ask for the number of family members, earning members, status of the residence (kaccha, pakka, rented etc), source of income, head of the family etc. Minute details about the family are gathered,” said a senior AMC official.

The officials said that the move will help the city as the civic body will have a data about each and every detail of the slumdwellers. The details gathered by surveyors will be used to issue special identity cards to the slumdwellers. “The special identity card will have a photograph along with their thumb print. Details like name, age, sex and occupation will be mentioned on the front side of the card while photographs of family members will be printed at the back,” added an official.

Other details like religion, fuel used to cook, economic status of the family, annual expense, availability of open space, profession, type of employment are also being acquired.

The data will be uploaded on a centrally accessible system that can be used as per requirement. “If the AMC wants to launch a scheme about slum kids, we will have an exact idea of how many slum kids can be a part of that scheme,” added the official.
