Ahmedabad bookmakers bet Rs200 crore, but favour South Africa

    The Champions Trophy, which got underway in South Africa on Tuesday, is not only important for the future of One-Day International (ODI) format of the cricket. The tournament is also high on the list of city bookmakers’ business plan.

    Bets are already being placed on the various teams playing in the tournament, a source close to the development said. Bets amounting to Rs200 crore will be placed over the course of the tournament, the source said.

    South Africa are currently the hot favourites among the teams participating in the Champions Trophy, with promised returns of Rs2.55 on a bet of Rs100. They are followed by Australia with promised returns of Rs3.50 and India on Rs4.50.

    For Sri Lanka, Pakistan, England, New Zealand and the West Indies, the promised returns on bets of Rs100 are Rs7, Rs7, Rs12, Rs14.50 and Rs27, respectively.

    South Africa are fancied among the bookies primarily because the tournament is being played on their home turf. Australia too are considered ‘strong’ contenders. The teams vying for the trophy are ranked by the bookies according to their recent performances and chances to win the tournament, a source said.

    A source close to the development said that the satta market is also bullish because on Dinesh Kalgi, the alleged satta kingpin, who was not sent to police remand in a satta scam case.

    At least 15 bookies in Ahmedabad and around 200 in total operate under him, the source said. The number of bookies in Ahmedabad has, however, fallen in the wake of increased police vigilance. Earlier, there were as many as 500 bookies in the city and more than 600 in the state, the source said.

    A source said that four big bookies will not be a part of the satta betting this times, as well as some located in Maninagar, Navrangpura and Madalpur, after Kalgi’s name cropped up as an accused in the recent satta racket.
