The Bengaluru police have registered an FIR against the son of Congress MLA NA Harris and 10 of his supporters for allegedly assaulting a person at a restaurant and later at a hospital where the victim was undergoing treatment.

Mohammed Haris Nalapad and 10 others have been booked by the city police allegedly beating up a person in a restaurant in Bengaluru's UB City. When the victim went to a hospital for treatment, he was again beaten up the group.

Mohammed Haris is the son of Shantinagar MLA NA Haris and also Bengaluru District Youth Congress General Secretary.

G Parameshwara, President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, said Haris has been suspended from the party for 6 years. This came soon after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah promised action saying that the offenders would be punished “regardless of who they are”.

According to a News18 report, the victim was having dinner at a restaurant in UB City when Nalapad and his friends walked in around midnight. A heated exchange took place between the group and the victim, who had a plaster on one of his legs when they told him to “sit properly”. The victim was identified as Vidwath, a resident of Dollars Colony in the city.

Following heated arguments, Vidwath was attacked by Nalapad and his friends. He was taken to the nearby Mallya Hospital for treatment but the group followed him there and allegedly beat him up again. The Opposition BJP and JD(S) have demanded that the Congress “immediately dismiss” Harris.

The incident could embarrass the Congress party ahead of the Karnataka Assembly polls, due later this year.

While the schedule for the 224-member state assembly poll is yet to be announced, campaign for the high voltage election has already begun with leaders of both the Congress and BJP exchanging barbs at each other.

While Siddaramaiah is looking for another term as the Chief Minister of the Southern state, BJP has declared BS Yeddyurappa as its chief ministerial candidate.

Karnataka is expected to witness a triangular contest with the H D Deve Gowda-led Janata Dal (Secular) being the third dominant player.
