Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday detained army officer Major Leetul Gogoi in a hotel along with a woman.

In 2017, Major Gogoi was in the news for tying a local Kashmiri to a bonnet of his vehicle in Badgam district during a stone-pelting incident. The current fracas started when he reportedly tried to check in a girl at the hotel. He was handed over the police which handed him over to his unit after questioning.

A police statement said they got a call from the Hotel Grand Mamta after an altercation. The J&K Police statement said: “A police party was deputed to the hotel and it surfaced that a woman (name withheld) and a man identified as Sameer Ahmed of Budgam had come to see some person.”

The police added: “But the hotel reception did not allow them to meet the person. Meanwhile, police reached the spot and got all the persons to the police Station. Subsequently, it was learnt that the woman had come to meet an Army officer. The identity and particulars of the Army officer have been collected by the police. The official was handed over to (his) unit after recording their statements. The statement of the woman is also being recorded."

Inspector General of Police SP Pani has ordered a probe into the incident which will be conducted by a SIT headed by SP(North) Srinagar.

The Indian Army officer, who shot to fame after tying a man to a jeep, had been awarded the Army Chief Commendation Card for sustained efforts in operations in the Valley.

The video became a topic of debate after the man, identified Farooq Ahmad Dar, was tied to the vehicle after casting his vote during the Jammu & Kashmir bye-elections.

At the time, Dar told DNA that he was paraded for 26 km allegedly to keep stone-pelters at bay. He said: "I cannot believe that I am alive. They first thrashed me and then tied me to the bonnet of the jeep and zoomed past several villages.”

Punjab CM  Captain Amarinder Singh had praised the young officer for showing amazing presence of mind in extreme pressure situation. His action became so famous that it was a cultural reference in a recent Tiger Shroff movie Baaghi 2.
