Only one out of 10 persons would confront an attacker and try to stop him in case of a terror attack, a survey involving 500 respondents from across the major cities in the country, including Mumbai, has revealed. The rest would try to escape.

Trishul, an NGO specialising in disaster management, conducted the survey over a month and released the results on Thursday. The survey related to terror threats around the globe and India cities, with specific threats in Mumbai. It was revealed that 70% of those interviewed believed that the terror threat was significantly higher in India at present. The survey was conducted across Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai. The sample survey included people in the age group of 19-32 years.

In their report, the NGO concluded that 90% of the people would choose to escape and secure themselves rather than confronting the attacker and trying to stop him or her. On the same lines, 70% respondents claimed that they will try getting to a safe place first and then seeking the aid of authorities during such an emergency situation.

"Very clearly, when terror strikes, young Indians prefer to find themselves a safe haven over helping others out," commented the report.

Further, 9 out of 10 Indians, i.e 90%, were of the opinion that it was essential for youngsters to get exposure to organisations such as the National Cadet Corps (NCC), to build nationalism, discipline and help them cope in crisis situations. In extension to the same question, around 60% respondents replied that they would like to learn about practical survival tips for handling a terrorist attack.

Commenting on the survey, Trishul general secretary & CEO M Asif said, "The survey tells us that not many people want to be a hero and face a terrorist. It is understandable due to their lack of capacity or resources to deal with a terrorist in such a situation."
