West Bengal: Six workers dead after inhaling toxic gas in paper mill

Incident happened in Hajinagar, North 24 Parganas.

In a tragic incident, six workers have died after inhaling toxic gas in West Bengal. The mishap happened in Hajinagar, in North 24 Pargana district of the state. According to Zee 24 Ghanta report, these men were working in a paper mil where the accident took place on Thursday evening. 

According to reports, there is a well inside the paper mill. All waste materials are dumped inside it. There was some issue with the pumping system of the mill, and couple of workers went down inside the well to look into the matter where the valves are located. That's where they felt dizzy after inhaling the toxic gases and lost consciousness. Seeing no response from them, four other workers also entered the well to rescue them. But they too fell ill after entering the well. 

The authorities alerted the fire brigade when there was no response from all the six workers. Finally, when the fire brigade men rescued the workers, all were found to be unconscious. They were rushed to the nearby hospital where they were declared dead on arrival. According to doctors, the workers died after inhaling toxic gases accumulated in the well. The name of the deceased are- Ashok Boral, Vijay Burma, Amit Yadav, Uday Raj, Mithun and Mohd Najim. 

According to reports, there was no proper infrastructure in the paper-mill. Police is currently probing the case. The owner of the mill is being questioned by them. The workers didn't have gas-masks, so there was a clear case of negligence in part of the mill authorities.
