To give a message to the grassroots before the last two phases of West Bengal assembly polls scheduled to be held on April 30 and May 5, the top leaders from the Congress and the Left, Rahul Gandhi and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, came together at a rally in Kolkata on Wednesday.

The alliance, which was formed due to pressure from Left party workers, truly reached its culmination with the top leaders sharing stage at the ‘jote’ rally in Kolkata.

Park Circus maidan, the venue of the election rally, saw a major show of strength as hundreds of Congress and Left supporters turned up to support the alliance. Both, Gandhi and Bhattacharya called for uniting against the Trinamool Congress and forming a government together in the state.

Hathodi haath me aa gaya, ab Trinamool Congress ko hatao (We have the hammer in our hand. Now let's remove Trinamool Congress). Congress and Left alliance will bring back the glory of West Bengal. Five years back, Mamata ji had promised to give employment to 70 lakh youths. But the youths did not get employment. Jute workers lost their jobs. Congress had believed Mamata Banerjee and supported her, but she failed all of us,” said Gandhi, adding, “She did not deliver what she promised, as a result of which the state is lagging behind other states. When some women raised protest in Kamduni, the Chief Minister dubbed them as Maoists instead of giving them protection. This is not the Bengal people had wished for.”

On the other hand, Bhattacharya remarked that such a rally was a rarity. “Such a rally is unseen in the history of our country. Our city, our state has never seen something like this before. In the last five years, Bengal has been ruined and destroyed. All the industries moved out and there are no signs of any new industry investing here. Till the time, Trinamool Congress will rule here, there will be no improvement. Removal of this government is the need of the hour,” said Bhattacharya, further adding, “Trinamool hatao, rajya bachao. (Remove Trinamool, save the state.)”
