In the latest incident of vandalism in Uttar Pradesh, a group of people in saffron clothes, who are allegedly kanwar pilgrims, have been caught chasing a car and attacking it. The incident was recorded on a mobile phone and is from Muzaffarnagar. According to news agency ANI, the passengers escaped with minor injuries.

The video is one of many that have emerged in the past few days where unrestrained hooliganism by the so-called pilgrims has caused public disruptions. While inaction, including a video of Meerut’s top cop showering the pilgrims with petals from a helicopter has raised questions, NDTV has also highlighted the increased anger on social media, with users questioning the authorities of inaction and asking how religion has become a garb to protect the hooligans.

Earlier on Thursday, the Delhi police made the first arrest in a case where a group of Kanwariyas vandalised a car after it allegedly brushed past one of them. Around a dozen saffron-robed pilgrims had wrecked a car and toppled it on a busy street in west Delhi's Moti Nagar area on Tuesday evening, as policemen and passers-by looked on.

The police on Thursday arrested Rahul alias Billa, a resident of Uttam Nagar in connection with the case. The accused has been previously involved in cases of house theft, police said.

A day earlier, the daughter of a CISF officer was driving the car that was smashed by a mob of kawanriyas who took the law in their own hands after an altercation with the woman and a man accompanying her.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier conducted an aerial survey of the Kanwar Yatra route during the first half of the Shrawan month that began on July 28. The saint-politician also reportedly showered flower petals from his chopper on the Kanwarias, who responded by prostrating on the highway as the chopper passed through them.
