BJP's IT cell chief Amit Malviya today triggered a controversy after he tweeted the date of the Karnataka Assembly polls before the Election Commission announced it.
His tweet came when Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat was addressing a press conference to announce the schedule for Karnataka polls but had not announced the date.
When Rawat's attention was drawn towards the tweet, he described it as a "very serious issue" that merited a probe and "stringent action".
The BJP IT cell head said the election would be held on May 12 and counting would take place on May 18. While he was correct on the polling day, the votes will be counted on May 15.
Taking strong objection to Malviya's tweet, the Congress today dubbed the BJP "Super Election Commission".
Malviya later deleted the tweet and said that he had only quoted a news channel.
Despite Malviya's defence, he was trolled vigourously on Twitter with some even demanding strict action against the BJP leader.
Here is how Twitterati reacted to Malviya's tweet:
#AmitMalviya announced the election date just 15 minutes before EC. How he got information about this. How much more does he have access to EC. What more does he know? Does the date decided by BJP IT cell. It’s very pathetic incident. EC should take strict action against this. pic.twitter.com/0nqkggcUVf

The scary part is that they are not only destroying credibility of institutions but openly flaunting it! Malviya’s tweet is blasé & deliberate. He knows he’ll get away with it. BJP is messaging that they are no longer bound by laws of the land https://t.co/VvTpTMSTnB

Credibility of EC is on test.
Will EC now issue notice to BJP President, Amit Shah & register an FIR against BJP IT Head for leaking EC’s confidential information? pic.twitter.com/i3vU2iJpjH
