Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday lauded Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's developmental works and said that the country should emulate his 'good governance model' at the national level.

Naidu was in Patna to inaugurate the Bihar Diwas celebrations, marking 106 years of the state's foundation as well as concluding the year-long celebration of Champaran Satyagraha's centenary year.

V-P Naidu said that the state government had set its agenda as development and emphasised on good governance while working for 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas'. "We are all one nation, one people… Muslim, Christian, forward, backward all are Indians. Religion is just a way of praying and there is no problem in that, but our culture is the same and we all should preserve it," he said.

Naidu said Bihar was a land of great personalities. "I haven't seen the freedom movement, but witnessed the total revolution call by Jai Prakash Narayan. It was Bihar which gave shape to non-violence — the most powerful weapon in the world," he said. He also quoted Lal Krishna Advani in saying "more than ideology, ideal behaviour is important". He also released a book related to Gandhi and Champaran Satyagraha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings on Bihar Diwas as well. The PM tweeted, "Greetings to my sisters and brothers of Bihar on Bihar Diwas. Right from historical times, Bihar's contribution towards the nation's progress is exemplary and invaluable." CM Nitish Kumar thanked PM Modi for his wishes.

On the occasion, Kumar also urged the people to maintain 'social harmony' in the state. "There are all types of people in the society. Ram Navami is round the corner and some antisocial elements may try to incite you, but I request you with folded hands to maintain peace and harmony. Bihar has not seen any communal riot in the last 12 years. But these days there are many people who are trying to spread social unrest in the state," he said.

A bouquet of events have been planned to mark Bihar Diwas and the celebrations will conclude on March 24.
