US most likely to discontinue US $7.5 billion Kerry-Lugar civilian aid package to Pakistan

According to sources in the finance ministry and diplomatic circles, the United States Congress is unlikely to extend the US $7.5 billion civilian assistance package to Pakistan under the Kerry-Lugar Act of 2009 that would expire by September next year.

The reports of discontinuation of funds come amidst increasing focus of the US in the Middle East hinting its shift from South Asia, reports the Express Tribune.

Pakistani Officials said that the government received discouraging signs about the continuation of the civilian aid package beyond 2015 during meetings with the US authorities.

The civilian package is expiring at a time when the U.S. is changing its priorities and strategic interests in the region that is limiting the chances of any extension.

The Act was passed by the US congress into law in October 2010.
