A two-year-old girl died on the spot after falling from the ninth floor of a building while playing in a balcony of their house in Pune on Tuesday afternoon. According to the police, her family members were present at home, but they were inside the house while the toddler was alone playing in the balcony.

Anika Devavrat Tomar (2) was the second of three children in the family with a nine-year-old girl and a six-month-old boy. The incident took place at around 4:30 pm at Metropolitan building in Chinchwad area.

Senior inspector Vitthal Kubde, in charge of Chinchwad police station, told DNA, "Anika was playing in the balcony of her house while her mother, her two siblings and her grandparents were inside the house. At around 4:30, the family members heard some people shouting from the ground floor and when they rushed to the balcony, they saw Anika's body lying in a pool of blood."

The family members rushed Anika to hospital but she was declared dead on arrival. Police officials suspect that the girl might have lost her balance while playing in the balcony.

"Prima facie, it appears that the girl climbed up the balcony grill and might have lost balance while trying to look down," Kubde added.
