Within a week after Ishrat Jahan, one of the petitioners against instant triple talaq joined BJP, her lawyer Nazia Ilahi Khan too joined the saffron party on Thursday. Jahan had joined the party on December 30, 2017 at the BJP party office in Howrah district where she lives.

Asked if she joined politics because Jahan did so, she answered in the negative. “No. I have always been working for the rights of Muslim women. I needed a stronger platform to surface my voice against atrocities against Muslim women and BJP has provided me that forum. That is why I have joined the party", said Nazia. The lawyer added that she was happy with the bill in its present form but wanted it to ensure maintenance for divorcee women. “Simply sending the man away to jail is not the solution for the woman in distress. I would want to ensure that she gets her maintenance money regularly. As a lawyer I have seen hundreds of women who had been separated from their husband but even after there were court orders, they were not getting any financial help from the estranged husband and were living a life of misery with her kids,” she said.

Along with Ilahi, about 150 Muslim women from various parts of the city also joined the party.  Handing over the party flag to her, state BJP president Dilip Ghosh said that while the Centre was trying to ensure empowerment of Muslim women, West Bengal Mamata Banerjee-led government was trying to do politics out of it. “Mamata had never cleared her stands about whether she opposed the bill or supported it and on Wednesday she said it was defective. She is the one who is doing politics over the issue,” he said.

On Wednesday, Mamata, speaking at a public meeting at Birbhum had said that the Triple Talaq Bill was a defective one and rather than doing any good to Muslim women it would jeopardise their security.
