The tourism ministry is holding a first of its kind investors summit in Delhi to attract investments in over 700 projects from over 29 states. With a total value of over Rs 50,000 crore, the projects will be discussed with over 50 investors from countries such as China, Dubai, Hong Kong, Qatar and Singapore, etc.

The summit will be inaugurated by finance minister Arun Jaitley in New Delhi on Wednesday, in the presence of tourism minister Mahesh Sharma, and Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu.

"There are several projects that hold a lot of potential from all across the country, and the ministry will facilitate the proposals. State ministers will be given a hour to make these presentations in front of the investors," said tourism secretary Vinod Zutshi.

Some of the potential investors who will participate in the summit include JP Morgan Chase, Hyatt, Mc Donald's, Mariott, Shinsei Bank, Carlson Rezidor Hotels, Goldman Sachs, etc. Yes Bank, KPMG, and Earnst & Young have been roped in as hospitality partners in the summit, which will be co-organised with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).

"In the last eight months, we have registered a tourist growth of over 10.2%, as opposed to the global average of 4.2%. While there was a growth of 15% in the inflow of foreign tourists, domestic tourism, too grew by 15%," said Zutshi. "We have a shortage of over 2,00,000 hotel rooms annually, and we are focussing on hospitality to ensure that more budget hotels come up."

He added that the tourism ministry is in talks with the home ministry for smooth e-visas for sea ports, and that a project to develop a oceanic terminal on the lines of Terminal 3 is on the anvil.

The secretary also revealed that another summit, India Global Travel Mart, on the lines of tourism summits like the annual World Travel Market held in London, will be announced soon. It is likely to happen in November. "In addition to that, the World Travel Market has announced India as a premier partner. This means that all publicity materials will encourage tourism to India," said Zutshi.

Some of the proposed projects include cruise tourism projects in Wokha in Nagaland and Sunderbans in West Bengal, ropeways in Nandi Hills in Karnataka and Loktak Lake in Manipur, medical tourism in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, wellness centre in Kapilavastu in Uttar Pradesh, adventure sports in Chikhaldara in Maharashtra.
