Terrorists made an abortive bid on the life of Superintendent of Police (SP) of Shopian district, Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar when they attacked his cavalcade with automatic weapons near Harmen village on Saturday.

The attack came on the day when the death toll in the Balhama encounter climbed to three after another body of terrorist was retrieved from the debris.

Police said the incident occurred in the morning when Dinkar was en route to attend an Army function in Shopian. Terrorists surfaced near Harmen village and fired indiscriminately on his cavalcade. Some of the bullets hit his bullet-proof escort vehicle.

The guards of the officer immediately retaliated forcing the miscreants to beat a hasty retreat. There was no loss of life or property in the incident.

"I was on way to attend the army function. Terrorists opened fire and some of the bullets hit my escort vehicle. My vehicle was not hit. We retaliated immediately and the militants fled from the spot," Dinkar told DNA.

Security forces immediately rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area to track down the terrorists.
