Two days after twenty-five faculty members at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), were handed termination letters by the Institute as the government could not provide grants for four centres of TISS that the teachers are a part of, students who are enrolled under these centres are now staring at a bleak future.

On Friday, faculty members and a few other staff from four centres of the institute Advance Centre for Women's Studies, Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies, Centre of Excellence for Human Rights Education and the School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance were sent termination letters from the institute registrar CP Mohankumar.

As the Niti Ayog plans to produce a 15-year Vision Document, there are chances that the grants for these centres would not be renewed by the government, which has led to panic and confusion amongst students enrolled under various courses at these centres. "Faculty members whose services are going to end on March 31 were teaching some important course modules. With no further extension of their tenures, there is no clarity about what would happen to the existing students and the ongoing academic activities at these centres," said a student from the institute on the condition of anonymity. Some students also said that since some of these professors were guiding them for their research projects, there was no clarity about what would happen after they leave.

Prof S Parasuraman, Director, TISS, said that the institute was still trying its best to retain all its staff members. "I am personally visiting the UGC officials on March 31. The Institute would try its best to retain all the staff members".

While asked about what would happen to students, he said, "The current academic year would be over in April, and teachers would complete all their academic activities till then. For the next year, we would make alternate arrangements for students. We have an excellent pool of faculty members who would guide these students".
