A BJP lawmaker from Rajasthan has defended cow protection groups, stating that those who smuggle cows will be killed.

According to an NDTV report, Gyan Dev Ahuja made the statements following reports of a mob beating up an alleged cow smuggler on Saturday. Ahuja, however, insisted that the man was not assaulted, but a truck fell on him.

Ahuja, who is known for his extremist views, had last year claimed that 300 condoms and 200 liquor bottles were found each day on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus.

On December 12, the Alwar police arrested a suspected cow smuggler and recovered 13 cows from a vehicle in which he was travelling along with three others who managed to get away. The cows were supposedly being taken to Haryana from Bhiwadi in Alwar.

“The incident took place near Narnaul in the early hours of Monday. Four persons travelling in an Eicher truck carrying the cows evaded police checking and tried to escape. When the police followed them, they opened fire on the police team. The police retaliated and fired five rounds. There were four persons in the truck. They tried to get away on foot, one has been arrested and search is on for other three. The arrested, one Umar, son of Ameen is a resident of Palla village in Nuh of Haryana.
