    Rains which created havoc after lashing in Chennai on Sunday and Monday broke a 100-year-old record, reports a leading national daily. 

    The total rainfall in Chennai was 119.73 cm till midnight on Monday breaking the 1918 record of 108.8 cm which had stood as the highest record, 

    As per the Metereological Department office's there is no data between 1943-1951 owing to the World War II due to which Nungambakkam observatory was shutdown. There are no data available during this period of time. The observatory moved to Meenambakkam in 1943 with all the rainfall recording infrastructure.

    The November rainfall still is a bonafide record as exceeds the numbers calculated at both observatories over the years. As per data from the MeT, a rainfall of 2.35 was recorded on Sunday and that of 1.9 cm was taken on Monday till 10.30 pm in Meenambakkam observatory. While the Nungambakkam observatory recorded 106.83 cm for the entire month, as oer Deputy Director General of meterologu SB Thambi.

    He said that the they had hoped that this year rainfall would surpass the 1918 year record as per Nungambakkam observatory data. But it failed to do so.

    A section of a major road near the Madhya Kailash signal also caved in as heavy rain pounded the city last night. Several low-lying areas and roads were inundated and office-goers had a tough time reaching their destination. Traffic in some parts, including the busy Velachery area, moved at a slow pace following inundation.

    Authorities declared a holiday for schools in Chennai, which witnessed heavy downpour last night.
