As the river water-dispute between Punjab and Haryana rages on, Haryana's main Opposition party, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief Abhay Chautala has decided to bar entry of all government vehicles from Punjab to enter Haryana from July 10.

Speaking after the state executive meeting held on Saturday, Leader of Opposition, Abhay Chautala said that the party workers will stage protest in Ambala from July 10, a day ahead of the hearing in the Sutlej Yamuna link canal case (SYL) in the apex court.

"All public buses and government vehicles registered in Punjab, especially those of officials and ministers will not be allowed to enter Haryana from July 10. Our youth workers will stand guard on National Highway (NH)-1 in Ambala which serves as the main entry point for Punjab vehicles to reach Delhi via Haryana. It is time that the Punjab government gives Haryana its due share in the river-water which it had been stalling since last four decades," said Chautala.

However, he highlighted that no inconvenience will be caused to common people of both states, as private vehicles will be allowed to commute. "We will distribute pamphlets to Punjab commuters to make them aware about our share of the river water and urge them to bring the issue in notice of their government," he said.

The Supreme Court had earlier passed an order in favour of Haryana and stated that the construction of SYL canal should be executed.

The issue has not only become a bone of contention between the two states, but has also divided the BJP units which differ in its stand. While BJP-ruled Haryana has set aside a budget of Rs 100 crore for the construction of the canal, Punjab BJP Chief Vijay Sampla met CM Amarinder Singh on Wednesday and assured support to oppose SYL construction at all cost.

A special meeting of Chief Ministers of the two states was also held with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for negotiations to resolve the water-dispute on April 20.

The next date of hearing in Supreme Court is on July 11.
