An army soldier has made the nation proud by eliminating three hardcore ultras on the Line of Control before laying down his life for the motherland.

Troops naturalised major infiltration bid and killed four militants in the last 24 hours on the Line of Control near Toot Mari Gali in the Naugam sector of Kupwara district.

When the army challenged the militants, they opened fire on the troops and in the ensuing gunfight which lasted for more than 24 hours four ultras were killed.

Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman at Srinagar, said Havildar Hangpan Dada of Rashtriya Rifles, who led his team and brought effective fire on the terrorists, was profusely injured while fighting with indomitable courage during the gunbattle. "After personally ensuring elimination of three terrorists, while being evacuated to base hospital, the braveheart succumbed to his injuries and made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty," he said

The encounter started on early on Thursday morning when troops guarding the LoC intercepted a group of militants.

Army has killed six militants in two different encounters across north Kashmir in the last 24 hours alone.

Police said two local Hizbul Mujahedeen militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Khonchipora village of Tangmarg in North Kashmir's Baramulla district on Friday.

"On specific information about the presence of militants in village Khonchipora, police, 2 Rashtriya Riffles (RR) and 176-Battalion of CRPF cordoned off the area and launched the search operation. The hiding militants were asked to surrender which they refused and instead fired upon the joint search party," a police spokesman said

An army jawan and a cop were also injured in the encounter. "The solider has got a minor bruises", said Colonel Joshi

This is the fourth fierce encounter between militants and forces in the Kashmir valley since May 21. Indian army on Saturday dealt a major blow to militants when they killed five top ultras in a fierce encounter at Chek Drugmulla village in Kupwara district of North Kashmir. A solider of 41 RR was killed and another injured in the incident.

Two days later militants sent a chilling reminder to Mehbooba Mufti led government when they carried out two sensational shoot and scoot attacks leaving three policemen including an officer dead in the summer capital city of Srinagar on May 23. Hours later, police killed two top Jaish e Mohammed commanders including most wanted Safullah in a late night raid at Sarai Bala in Srinagar's nerve centre of Lal Chowk.

Terror revisited the Kashmir valley again on Wednesday when militants attacked a marriage party and killed a cop in Pulwama district of south kashmir. National Conference district president Mohidin Mir who was present at the wedding escaped unhurt. However the riffle of his security guard was snatched by the ultras before fleeing from the spot.

The spurt in the attacks and encounters have spurred the fears that the summer might be hot since there has been renewed attempts of infiltration from across the border to replenish the militant ranks in Kashmir.

"Army is doing an excellent job at the borders by stopping the infiltration (from across the line of control)" said Mehbooba Mufti, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister.
