Dhupguri Police Station in Jalpaiguri district has ranked fourth among 14,850 police stations across the country in a competition to judge their performance along parameters set by Bureau of Public Research and Development (BPR&D).

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had recommended all states and Union Territories to identify their best police stations and send the recommendations to the MHA.

While RS Puram Police Station in Coimnbatore and Panjagutta PS in Hyderabad were ranked first and second, respectively, Gudamba in Lucknow was ranked third and Dhupguri in West Bengal secured the fourth position.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhupguri PS, Sanjoy Dutta, talking to DNA said it was a team effort led by the district Superintendent of police, Amitabha Maity and that they were yet to get an official confirmation of the result though he had heard about it unofficially. “The process had begun in June last year when I received a message from the SP that my police station had been chosen for the competition. He had sent our nomination to the Director General of Police, West Bengal who, in turn, had sent it to the MHA,” he said.

Later a team had come for a physical verification of the PS and its performance in November 2017.

Asked about his initial reaction, Dutta said, “It always feels good to be rewarded but it also puts a lot of additional pressure as expectations from you also increases and the reward which we got is a result of a year-long performance of our PS which we need to carry on.”

Posted as the OC of the PS in February 2016, Dutta had been constantly monitoring several aspects of the PS mainly, cleanliness, public dealing, proper investigation by investigating officers and recovery of stolen and robbed goods.

The other six among the top 10 police stations of the country are K4 police station in Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Banbhoolpara in Nainital (Uttarakhand), Ghiror in Mainpuri (Uttar Pradesh), Rishikesh (Uttarakhand), Valapattanam in Kannur (Kerala) and Kirti Nagar (Delhi).

Performance of the police stations was measured on a scale of 50 according to standards set by BPR&D. Criteria included detaining of persons charged under National Security Act or Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act, fewer pendency of cases of the year before and condition of law and order in the area. Other than that, maintenance of records at the PS, cleanliness in and around the PS, optimal utilisation of resources and behaviour were also looked into for assessment.
